Montgomery County Community College’s West and Central campuses are ranked second and third in Pennsylvania for their cumulative recycling rates of 38.64% and 34.68%, respectively, in the Benchmark Division of the 2011 RecycleMania competition.
When compared to Benchmark Division institutions nationally, the West Campus is ranked 27th in the country and the Central Campus is ranked 33rd.
The cumulative recycling rates are calculated by combining the scores from the Per Capita Classic and Waste Minimization categories. The Per Capita Classic score is based on pounds of recyclables generated per person on campus, and the Waste Minimization score is based on the pounds of municipal solid waste (both trash and recyclables) generated per person on campus.
During the 10-week competition, the College’s Central Campus generated a total of 33,521.8 pounds of recycling and averaged .52 pounds of recycling per person per week, based on the full-time equivalent (FTE) campus population of 7,966.
The West Campus generated a total of 8,950 pounds of recycling and averaged .685 pounds of recycling per person per week, based on the full-time equivalent (FTE) campus population of 1,831.
